the Artist Trading Card (ATC) is a variation of the well known sport trading card one can buy, but it differs in the way it is produced: it is either an original or a small edition. The size of an ATC card is 2.5 by 3.5 inches (64 x 89 mm). As an original miniature work of art, each card is signed and dated on the back by the artist (include a number if it is part of an edition).
Artist Trading Cards were invented in 1997 by Swiss artist M. Vanci Stirnemann while visiting The New Gallery in Calgary, Canada. They developed out of the artist’s interest in a cultural performance concerned with non-hierarchical, non-monetary, non judgemental exchange between artists. ATCs are traditionally traded one for one, not bought or sold. Artist Trading Card sessions have spread all over the world.
The theme (s) are open for interpretation. All techniques and mediums are welcome; includes painting, drawing, collage, mini-comics/books, rubber stamp works, pop ups, sewn, mixed media, metal, wax, photographs, 2D or 3D etc.; originals or a limited edition series. The cards must be original and sized to fit into the plastic collector sheet designed for hockey/baseball cards. A free plastic collector sheet is available from the gallery.
Along with your ATC cards, please include:
Self-addressed, Return-envelope. USA artists please send $ 2. in US funds for return postage. Europe and International artists send Postal Money Order or International Coupon for stamp purchase.
